The last 2 decades have brought
about innumerable changes to the music industry. Possibly one of the
biggest game-changers has been the advent and popularization of the internet.
Though it has had both a positive and negative impact on the music
industry (the ability to pirate music so easily is generally considered
negative), it has, on the whole, had a largely positive impact. Aside
from the new audiences that it has allowed musicians to reach and the
incredible ease of distribution, the internet has also opened the door for one
of the most significant recent changes in the tried and true method for
musicians to create music; the record label. In today's world, almost anyone
can create music by raising money through the use of a
kickstarter, including the talented musicians of On Til'
Morning.
On Til' Morning formed in late 2013 and they come
out of Atlanta, Georgia. The band is made up of longtime acquaintances Sara
Meyer (Vocals), Cory Hopkins (Guitar), Andy Bowen (Guitar), Stephen Ousley
(Bass), and Whit Maxey (Drums). Since their beginning in the fall of
2013, they had dreamed of producing their own work, and promptly released their
debut EP, Something Beautiful, in December of that year. Their unique
style of alternative rock, expertly mixed with pop rock and containing hints of
post-grunge has a certain marketability, while still retaining all of the
meaning and integrity that was intended.
On Til' Morning's debut EP, "Something Beautiful" |
The title track of their EP, Something
Beautiful, combines elements of post-grunge and alt-rock, as well as
modern pop touches to make a potently addictive song. The track
begins with some light synth textures and is soon joined by a simple
acoustic riff that continues through much of the beginning of the song.
The guitar drops out briefly to leave only synths and very subtle
cymbals, while Sara Meyer unleashes one of the band's greatest draws; her
smooth and emotive vocals, reinforced by lyrics that paralyzes the listener.
It is in that verse that you really get a sense of the soul of the band.
After a few seconds, the riff reappears, but this time,
accompanied by more prevalent drums, lead guitar, and bass. Whit Maxey
holds a steady beat with complex drum fills while the lead guitar plays
sporadic licks over the track. All of this quickly gives way to the
heavily distorted second half of the song, where hard-hitting drums and thick
bass rule, whilst the guitar spits out engaging chord progressions and riffs
that evolve into a brief solo just before the song ends.

Fly Away takes a vastly different approach to the art of songwriting
with a much more mellow and solemn tone. The song opens with Sara's
quiet, yet expressive voice backed by slow piano work. This continues for
about a minute when the synths come in and add some more depth to the song.
The instrumental becomes more intense as the song progresses and minor
guitar work is sprinkled in, briefly. The real feature and key to this
track are the vocals. Sara Meyer's voice prevails over all and gives off
waves of emotion and passion. The lyrics are also very pertinent and push
the listener to engage with the song and contemplate its meaning. The
track ends the way it began, with Sara's smooth voice and a solitary piano.
On Til' Morning is a group of creative individuals
who have a passion for making music. They have taken advantage of modern
technology and have shown what is possible for anyone who has ever hoped to
officially release their own, personal music. You can check out
